SWANSON COMPLETES ROSEVILLE “SWEEP” WITH 50-LAP SPRINT WIN


Tanner Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif. hopes his 2009 “streak” at All American Speedway continues October 10 when the USAC Western Sprint Cars return to the Roseville, Calif. oval.


 


Swanson scored a rare “doubleheader sweep” Saturday night at Roseville, winning both the USAC Western Midget and Sprint features. He trailed Shauna Hogg for the first 37 laps of the Sprint race, then led the last 13 in his TK Motorsports entry to beat Tony Hunt, Audra Sasselli, Scott Pierovich and Brian McClish. Hogg wound up seventh.


 


JoJo Helberg posted the fastest qualifying time. The win enhanced Swanson’s series point lead, which stands at 105 over Helberg entering the October 10 race.


 


The October 10 race at Stockton marks a return of Sprint racing to the track for the first time in three years. Tony Hunt, who ranks fourth in the latest standings, won both 2006 outings, while Brian McClish, third in the latest points, won a 2005 race there.


 


Davey Hamilton, the Indianapolis 500 veteran who finished 10th at Roseville Saturday, won a USAC Sprint race at Stockton in 2000 and Midget race there in 1999.


 


Swanson’s “sweep” marked only the 27th such sweep in USAC Sprint/Midget competition in 225 such “doubleheaders.” Ironically, his brother Kody achieved the last one, in 2007 at Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, Calif.
