SPRINT CARS MAKE BURLINGTON DEBUT SATURDAY
The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series will join the USAC Mopar National Midgets for Saturday night’s “doubleheader” at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa, marking the first time the series has competed at the 3/8-mile dirt oval.
Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif. sits atop the series standings after early-season success included four wins in his first five starts! He’s only 12 points ahead of Levi Jones, however, after Jones won three of the four recent “Eastern Storm” features.
Jones is trying to become only the second four-time champion in USAC National Sprint Car history, matching the feat of Steve Butler (1986-87-88-90).
The last USAC National race at Burlington was held in 1973, a Midget race won by Tommy Astone. The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint cars last raced in Iowa May 22 when Bobby Santos III won at Iowa Speedway. The last USAC dirt-track Sprint race in Iowa was last August when Jesse Hockett won at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa.
Bryan Clauson, Jerry Coons Jr. and Chris Windom round out the “top-five” in the latest series standings. All three have been victorious this season. Tracy Hines, who shared this past week’s “Indiana Midget Week” crown with Brad Kuhn, is sixth in the latest points.
