1970 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: FREQUENT FLYER CARUTHERS IS THE FIRST CHAMP OF THE 70s

By: Richie Murray

Exuberant 25-year-old Jimmy Caruthers prevailed in a fantastic point race with 33-year-old Dave Strickland, recording 43 top-tens in 53 starts, to nip Strickland by just 12.48 points in a title race that came down to the final event.  Doug Caruthers, the father of the champion, also became an entrant champion for the first time during the 1970 campaign.

In his first full season of competition, Caruthers won a total of seven feature events and over $15,000 in prize money on his way to the title.  Jimmy and Dave traded the point lead no less than eight times during their incredible drive for points.

Near midseason, Caruthers fell behind Strickland by several points and was heard to remark, “I’ve just about given up as far as the championship is concerned,” but his actions showed that he still had his heart and mind on the prize.

With Strickland leading Caruthers entering late August, a busy race weekend awaited on Friday at Santa Fe Speedway in Hinsdale, Ill. and on Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis.  No Midwest race was scheduled for Saturday, but a west coast national points race was on the docket.  While both needed every point they could muster, both made a mutual agreement, an iron-clad promise, that neither of them would race at Ascot Park.  No way, no how.  A deal is a deal.

However, all’s fair in love, war and, apparently, racing for championships.  After Strickland won the first round at Santa Fe and Caruthers finished fifth, Strickland strolled down to Caruthers’ pit for a quick chat.  However, Caruthers was nowhere to be found.  When told that Caruthers had left for Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to catch a flight to Los Angeles for the Ascot Park event, Strickland made a beeline for the same airport determined to get a ticket on that same flight.

The airline informed Strickland that yes, there was, in fact, one seat left on the plane.  Strickland took it, boarded the plane and walked to his assigned row only to find that his seat was shoulder-to-shoulder with, guess who, Jimmy Caruthers.  Strickland got the last laugh on that trip, winning at Ascot Park while Caruthers finished 14th.  After another flight back to Wisconsin on Sunday for Angell Park, Caruthers finished as the runner-up while Strickland was right next door in third.

Strickland compiled 10 feature victories to lead the entire division in that category during 1970.  In the season finale at Ascot Park, he needed a clear-cut first or second but only managed sixth while Caruthers finished just ahead in fifth.  Strickland finished the season with 42 top-ten placings to his credit in 52 feature appearances.

The mighty midgets made their second visit to the famed Astrodome in Houston, Texas for March’s Astro Grand Prix.  Called by many “the eighth wonder of the world,” the huge indoor stadium played host to 60 entries.  A 100-lap feature race climaxed the Saturday night program which saw hometown hero A.J. Foyt capture the $25,000 event in his only series appearance of the year.  A partisan audience of 21,431 gave A.J. a standing ovation at the conclusion of the event.

Danny Brown was named Rookie of the Year.  The 24-year-old from Rossville, Ill. started racing while in the service in Florida.  He lost his leg in an automobile accident while stationed in Alaska, but it didn't hamper his racing ability one iota.  Larry Rice earned Most Improved Driver honors, winning three races and finishing 5th in points after taking 14th in 1969.

USAC Midget supervisor Bob Stroud celebrated his birthday on February 22 at San Jose (Calif.) Speedway by directing his 1,500th series race.  Season opener winner Ray Elliott of Lockport, Ill. was crowned the Indoor Midget Champion.

During qualifying at Ohio’s Tri-County Speedway in April, Bobby Grim received multiple injuries when his throttle stuck entering the third turn on his first lap.  After hitting the rail and flipping four times, the force of the gyrations snapped Grim’s shoulder harness and seat belt, throwing him to the track with the car landing next to him.  He was back in action two months later where he set a new track record in qualifying for the Night Before the 500 at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway.

Future USAC Stock Car king Dean Roper made three rare USAC Midget starts in 1970, finishing a best of fourth in June at Capital Speedway in Holts Summit, Mo. while youthful Swede Savage climbed into a midget for the Turkey Night Grand Prix five days after winning his first and only Indy Car race at Phoenix International Raceway.

A change was made in the starting line-up procedure for series events in 1970, allowing the top-two finishers in the semi-feature to enter the main event for the first time, along with the 16 fastest qualifiers.  The new system allowed the “little guy” a better chance at making the feature, plus adding entertainment to the semi as drivers fight for a spot in the feature.
