1966 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: IRON MIKE SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS HIS TITLE

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Mike McGreevy of Hayward, California successfully defended his crown during 1966 by winning the USAC National Midget championship for the second year in a row.  The quiet and friendly McGreevy proved, as he did the year before, that consistency pays off.  He started 53 feature events during the busy season and finished out of the top-12 on only three occasions.  He won five races and backed the wins with eight seconds, eight thirds and nine fourths.

He began his campaign in February driving for Myron Caves until switching in July to a brand new machine owned by Dick and Owen Kincaid.  In the final races of the season on the west coast, he wheeled cars for Jack London and Cy Westbrook.

From May until the season’s end, the points chase turned out to be a bitterly contested three-way affair between McGreevy, Mel Kenyon and Don Meacham of Fresno, Calif.  At one time in July, only 4.45 points separated first from third, and Meacham still had a mathematical chance of winning the championship with three events remaining.

Meacham compiled an impressive list of nine wins, more than any other driver, and it marked the third-straight year that the driver with the greatest number of wins was not the champion.  Bob Tattersall took fourth in points with eight victories.

The Kenyon brothers, Mel and Don, repeated their 1965 USAC National Midget entrant title, this time with Mel back in the driver’s seat.  Mel’s brilliant career was all but cut down in a fiery USAC Championship Car accident at Langhorne (Pa.) Speedway just one year prior in June of 1965, and it had seemed so unlikely that he would ever race again, that the racing world watched with considerable apprehension as he gingerly lowered himself into the cockpit on a bitterly cold night in March at Tucson (Ariz.) Motor Speedway, a race in which he finished an admirable fourth.

Still pale and drawn from his long battle with pain, on the following night at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz., he amazed everyone by setting a new track record in qualifying, then waged a see-saw battle with Chuck Rodee in the feature with the two swapping the lead on numerous occasions before Rodee got by near the end to defeat Kenyon by mere feet.

Midget racing lost one of its finest competitors with the death of Rodee in May due to injuries received when he crashed during practice for the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Rodee, the runner-up to Shorty Templeman in the 1956 standings, stood second in points at the time of his accident with three wins to his credit.

The wave of sadness continued just three weeks later when three-time USAC National Midget driving champion Jimmy Davies died of injuries received when his car crashed into the retaining wall during hot laps at Santa Fe Speedway in Hinsdale, Ill. on June 3, resulting in a fatal basal skull fracture and internal injuries.  Davies won the midget title in 1960-61-62 and was the series’ all-time winningest driver at the time of his accident with 48 victories.

Gene Shannon, chairman of the USAC National Midget division's rules subcommittee, called a meeting of his group early in the season to discuss some problems.  High on the list was the appearance of race personnel at events.

“Let's have a cleanup campaign with our people,” Shannon offered at the time.  “Let's strive for clean looking drivers and mechanics.  Certainly, they can't stay nice and white while the race is on, but there isn’t any reason why we can't show up for a race with nice clean uniforms.  We'll start out by asking them to cleanup.  It’s necessary we might have to introduce some sort of a fine.  After all, we are in front of the public, and we want them to have a good impression of our division.”

Mario Andretti, driving the Caves Buick, started 13th spot and toured the 50 laps on the paved half-mile of Michigan’s Berlin Raceway in record time for the distance in what was his only career USAC National Midget win on July 8.

“I've got to find time to run in more of these,” Andretti said in the moment.  “This is real racing, and it keeps you sharp.”

In a reversal from year’s past, the series changed its official name from the “Offy 110” division to “Compact Sprints.”

“We aren't running midgets in the common use of that word in today's racing,” said Henry Banks, USAC's Director of Competition.  “These cars are actually Compact Sprints, and that's what they'll be known as from now on.  The word ‘midget’ today is very confusing to the public.  There are quarter-midgets, half-midgets and three-quarter midgets.  Twenty years ago, that confusion didn't exist.  Today the Compact Sprint is a far cry from the midgets as we used to know them.”
