FORMAT FOR "DICK GAINES CLASSIC" FINALIZED

FORMAT FOR “DICK GAINES CLASSIC” FINALIZED

The format for this Saturday’s ”Dick Gaines Classic” USAC Special Event Sprint race at the Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway has been finalized and will mirror the format utilized in the recent “Ultimate Challenge” event at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

A total of 10 races comprise the unique format, including two rounds of heat races. An initial draw and a special “passing points” formula will determine starting lineups, with 24 cars set to start the $10,000-to-win 30-lap feature event on the 1/3-mile banked dirt oval.

Saturday night’s race honors the memory of one of Indiana’s greatest Sprint car heroes, who was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa in 1992. Dick was nearly unbeatable in the early-1960s, then won the prestigious “Little 500” in Anderson, Ind. in 1973 and 1976. In 1974 he won the Knoxville Nationals, beating Jan Opperman on the final lap! In all he amassed over 600 victories in 15 different states!
