STAT BOOK: GRANT & KTJ’S BACK & FORTH BATTLE CARRIES INTO HUSET’S
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Brandon, South Dakota (September 8, 2021)………Alternating feature wins has been the name of the game of late for both Justin Grant and Kevin Thomas Jr. in the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship over the past five races.
Following Grant’s victory during the Indiana Sprint Week finale on July 31 at Tri-State Speedway, the two have followed each other in a game of one upmanship since that point that carries into this weekend’s Huset’s Speedway USAC Nationals at the 1/3-mile dirt oval in Brandon, South Dakota on September 10-11-12.
Thomas (Cullman, Ala.) followed up with a victory at Paragon Speedway on Aug. 22. Grant (Ione, Calif.) roared back with an opening night victory during Sprint Car Smackdown at Kokomo Speedway on Aug. 27. Thomas got the upper hand during the daylight at Kokomo on Aug. 28. Later that same night, Grant was back on top as the Smackdown king at Kokomo, which also set a new USAC record.
At no point in the 66-year history of USAC National Sprint Car racing have two drivers alternated victories for five consecutive races. Until now.
On seven past occasions, drivers have alternated wins for four-straight feature contests, with some notable occurrences delivered via some of the greatest rivalries in series history.
Parnelli Jones and A.J. Foyt swapped USAC Sprint victories in September of 1961 with Rufus Parnell getting the job done in a grueling 100-lapper at Salem, Ind. as well as on the neighboring Ohio dirt of New Bremen Speedway en route to his second-straight series title. Sandwiched between Parnelli’s wins were A.J.’s at New York’s Lancaster Speedway and Pennsylvania’s Reading Fairgrounds.
Between 1968-1971, USAC’s greatest sprint car rivalry was born and raised, an era christened as the “Larry & Gary Show.” The key players were Larry Dickson and Gary Bettenhausen who not only alternated feature wins twice for four-straight races in both 1968 and 1970. They both also alternated series championships for four years straight between 1968-71, Dickson winning in ’68 and ’70 while Gary B. cashed in during the ’69 and ’71 seasons. Impressively, when one won the title, the other finished second.
In 1968, Dickson won the first end of the doubleheader at New Bremen while Bettenhausen answered in the second leg of the twin 50-lap features. Dickson stormed back for victory on the Dayton (Ohio) Speedway high banks followed by Gary B. scoring once again in the series’ debut at Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway.
The second time it occurred, in 1970, Dickson manhandled the Capitol Super Speedway banks in Oregon, Wis. (now known as Madison International Speedway). Gary B. capitalized at Indianapolis Raceway Park’s 50-lapper, with Dickson checking off another win at New Bremen with Bettenhausen laying down the final gauntlet on the pavement of I-70 Speedway in Missouri.
Rich Vogler and Tom Bigelow answered each other with successive victories in July of 1981. “Rapid Rich” scored on the borderland dirt/pavement high banks of Ohio’s Eldora Speedway and Indiana’s Winchester Speedway. Splitting between and around the Vogler triumphs was Bigelow who earned his final two career series victories in that stretch, first at Kokomo, Ind., then notched his 52nd and final USAC Sprint score at Beaver Dam, Wis., which stood as an all-time record for career wins until surpassed by Dave Darland 33 years later in 2014.
Sheldon Kinser and Steve Butler achieved the same in midsummer of 1984 on a variety of Hoosier-state dirt tracks. Kinser bagged his first win of the four-race set at Lincoln Park Speedway. Butler picked up the win 24 hours later at Paragon Speedway. One week later, Sheldon was back on top at Bloomington Speedway while Butler once again controlled the pace at Paragon in the follow-up affair.
The year of 1986 was dominated for the summer stretch by champions Rick Hood and Sheldon Kinser. Hood notched a pair on the quarter-miles of Lawrenceburg, Ind. and “Little” Springfield Speedway. Before and after Springfield, Sheldon had his heyday on the big half-mile of Terre Haute, Ind. and the world’s fastest 5/16-mile dirt track at Lincoln Park.
Prior to 2021, the last such occasion that featured at least four consecutive alternating A-Main winners came at the tail end of the 1998 season and spilled over to the beginning of the 1999 campaign.
Derek Davidson became a first-time winner on the USAC trail at Red Hill Raceway in Illinois in the penultimate round of ’98 while Steele closed out the year with a masterful performance at Winchester, Ind. Davidson opened up 1999 in victory lane at Eldora while Steele tallied another in the second round, once again at Winchester.
Already in uncharted territory at this point, Grant and Thomas will continue their trend of back-and forth front-running supremacy this weekend at Huset’s Speedway for three consecutive nights of doubleheaders with the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11-12, for the inaugural Huset’s Speedway USAC Nationals.
A Thursday practice night begins the festivities for both divisions on September 9 starting at 6pm Central. Pit gates will open at Noon Central, and the front gates will open at 4pm. Pit passes are $20 for practice night and the stands will be open to all fans for free admission. Engine heat takes place at 5pm, followed by a quick drivers meeting at 5:45pm, then moving right along into the first practice session at 6pm.
For the first two nights of racing on Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11, pit gates open at Noon Central. The front gates will open at 4pm with the drivers meeting at 3:30pm and engine heat and cars on track at 5:15pm. The Sprint Car and Midget features will each pay $5,000 to win on Friday and Saturday.
On the final night, championship night, on Sunday, Sept. 12, pit gates open at Noon Central. The front gates will open at 3pm with the drivers meeting at 4:15pm and cars on track at 4:45pm. The Sprint Car and Midget features will each pay $20,000 to win on Sunday.
General admission tickets each night are $35 for adults, $20 for youths age 6-12 and free for children age 5 and under. Reserved tickets are available now in advance at www.USACnationals.com.
If you can’t make it to the event in person, all three nights of racing action at the Huset’s Speedway USAC Nationals will be aired live on FloRacing at https://bit.ly/2ZpafUr.
