IMRA TO 34; MTM TO WAYNESFIELD; MALLONEE, WATSON, SUNN SCORE VICTORIES
USAC Speed2 Midget racing unfolds in Iowa and Ohio this weekend as the IMRA and Midwest Thunder series compete on dirt tracks at Burlington, Iowa (IMRA) Waynesfield, Ohio (Midwest Thunder).
Mitch Davis leads the IMRA series to Saturday’s race at 34 Raceway. It’s the “101.7 ‘The Bull’ Night at the Races.” Saturday’s race at Waynesfield Raceway Park will be the first for the Midwest Thunder series at that venue where Gage Etgen will try to keep a grasp on his early-season point lead.
Jeff Mallonee of Davenport, Iowa led all but the first lap of Saturday night’s 20-lap USAC IMRA Midget feature at Spoon River Speedway in Canton, Ill. He passed Brent Burrows on lap two and led to the checkered flag to beat Gedd Ross, Burrows, Mitchell Davis and Jake Sollenberger.
Alex Watson of Columbus, Ohio won Saturday night’s USAC Midwest Thunder Midget race at Montpelier (Ind.) Motor Speedway. He trailed Etgen for 17 laps before taking over the top spot, leading the final three laps for the win. Etgen took second ahead of Gunnar Lucius, Jacob Taylor and Corey Bedwell.
Josh Sunn of White River Junction, Vt. won Saturday night’s 20-lap USAC DMA Midget opener at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, Vt. He led the last 11 laps after passing Anthony Nocella on lap 10. Defending series champion Adam Pierson ended up second ahead of Adam Whitney, Dean Christensen and Jeff Champagne. The series resumes May 21 at Bear Ridge.
