WATERS CLAIMS 2011 UTAH FORD FOCUS TITLE
USAC’s Western Ford Focus competitors will have this weekend’s schedule all to themselves, competing at the All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif. Two Western Ford Focus feature are on tap, along with a feature event for the Western Focus Young Guns.
Brodie Kostecki leads the Western Ford Focus standings, while Kostecki and Trevor Hunt are tied for the lead in the Western Focus Young Guns points.
Gregg Fuette of West Valley City, Utah led all 25 laps to win the 2011 Utah Ford Focus finale at Rocky Mountain Raceways Saturday night. Jim Waters finished second and put a lid on the 2011 series championship. Chuck Groat, Ron Duncombe and Guy Sainsbury rounded out the ”top-five” at the checkered flag.
Keegan Walmer of Portland, Ore. and Kostecki, of Roseville, Calif., scored feature wins in Saturday night’s “Fall Harvest Classic” Ford Focus races at the Madera Speedway. Walmer led the first five laps of the Western Ford Focus race, then yielded to Garett Peterson. On the final lap, Walmer regained the lead and won over Paul Graham, Jessica Clark, Ricky Bowers and Jeff Oleen. Kostecki passed Trevor Hunt on the fourth lap of the Focus Young Guns feature and led the last 17 laps to beat Hunt, James Edens and Ricky Bowers.
Andrew Mulhearn of Whittier, Calif. and Cole Custer of Kannapolis, N.C. scored USAC feature wins in Saturday night’s Ford Focus activity at the Ventura Raceway. Mulhearn passed Jarid Blondel on lap 14 and led the final seven laps of the Western Ford Focus feature to beat Wally Pankratz, Tyler Dolacki, Casey Martinez and Nick Carlson. In the accompanying Focus Young Guns race, Custer led the opening lap, yielded to Katlynn Leer on lap two but regained the lead on lap three and led the rest of the way to win the 14-lap race over Leer, Parker Colston, Austin Blair and Christine Breckenridge.
Ross Rankine of Willard, Ohio and Sam McGhee of Camby, Ind. were the winners of USAC Ford Focus features at Columbus Motor Speedway Saturday night. Rankine passed James Robertson on lap 20 and led the final 21 laps to win the 40-lap Midwest/Eastern Ford Focus feature in his National Pride Beast/Ford. Nick Hamilton finished second ahead of Jarett Andretti, Robertson and Gage Walker. Toby Alfrey led the first two laps. Rankine’s win made him the Midwest Pavement Ford Focus Champ for 2011. McGhee led all but the first lap of the 20-lap Midwest/Eastern Focus Young Guns feature to beat fast qualifier Cooper Clouse, Michael Fanelli, Mikell McGee and Stevie Kuhn, who led lap one. McGhee piloted the Stoops Freightliner/CPM Machine Spike to the win.
