IT’S A WRAP: WIGAL WINS CLOSEST TITLE RACE IN USAC MIDWEST THUNDER SPEED2 MIDGET HISTORY
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Speedway, Indiana (October 26, 2023)………Points weren’t top of mind for Zach Wigal at the beginning of the 2023 USAC Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 Midget season.
Among the Belpre, Ohio driver’s initial plans for the year were to compete only on a part-time basis with the USAC Midwest Thunder series due to scheduling conflicts with his busy racing slate which routinely took him back and forth between his Ohio home and North Carolina’s Millbridge Speedway in the micro sprint ranks.
As it turned out, however, Wigal managed to accomplish it all, starting all 21 events on the season en route to capturing the USAC Midwest Thunder driving title by the narrowest margin in series history – three points and one single position.
Zach Wigal opened the year with the first of his six victories on the season with a May win at Montpelier (Ind.) Motor Speedway, finishing just ahead of Bryce Massingill (Troy, Ohio). In the series’ next outing in June at Ohio’s Moler Raceway Park, Massingill turned the tables by passing Wigal for the lead and the first of his own six wins on the season with Wigal finishing a distant second.
Massingill and Wigal duels became a familiar theme throughout the season as the two Buckeyes continuously traded feature wins and the point lead, which they did, as fate would have it, six different times.
Wigal reeled off successive wins at Limaland Motorsports Park, Moler, Paragon Speedway, Atomic Speedway and Circle City Raceway. Meanwhile, Massingill grabbed first place trophies thereafter at Atomic, Limaland, Moler twice and at Montpelier late in the year.
During that late August stop at Montpelier, Wigal’s 12-point lead turned into a 35-point deficit due to a miraculous charge by Massingill after, ironically, having no charge earlier in the night. That, coupled with an avalanche of issues for Wigal, loomed large on the title race.
Electrical issues in his heat race forced Bryce Massingill to start near the tail end of the field, but as it turned out, it still couldn’t keep him out of victory lane. Massingill blitzed through the field from the outside of row 10, then raced into the lead with two laps remaining to win from the 20th spot by a 0.156 second margin. At the same time, an engine issue plagued Wigal on lap four while he was leading, subsequently dropping him from first to 22nd in the finishing order.
Wigal dug in and answered in the ensuing rounds with authority, taking a win at Circle City followed by a third at Montpelier, a fourth at Waynesfield and another fourth at Gas City. The Waynesfield race spelled doom for Massingill (Troy, Ohio), who dropped out early with a 20th place finish due to mechanical issues, sending Wigal back to the top of the points with one race remaining in October at Gas City.
For the final race of the season, Wigal enlisted the assistance of USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship driver Chase McDermand who owned the car that Wigal drove in this year’s Driven2SaveLives BC39 at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. McDermand served as Wigal’s crew chief for the night at Gas City.
Needing to finish three spots ahead of Wigal in the finale, Massingill led the opening two laps of the feature before Matt Lux (Manilla, Ind.) took over for good. For Wigal, a fourth-place result provided him with a three-point edge in the title race, which proved to be the difference over Massingill who finished as the runner-up in the feature and in the points.
For Wigal, it was pure joy to conclude his first full year with the series as a champion. On the other hand, it was a bitter pill for Massingill who has now finished third (2021), second (2022) and second (2023) in the series standings over the past three years.
Four drivers earned their first feature victories with the series in 2023, including three-time winner Luke Hall (Ludlow Falls, Ohio), a home state winner at Fremont Speedway and twice more at Waynesfield Raceway Park, the latter of which saw his engine expire on the final lap before coasting across the finish line just a half-car length ahead of Jakeb Boxell.
Past TQ Midget champion Matt Lux made his initial foray into the USAC Midwest Thunder series this past year, winning four times overall. Two of those wins came in non-points special events in May at Ohio’s half-mile Eldora Speedway and weeks later at Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis, Ind. He also picked off a pair of full points wins in the second half of the year at Montpelier and again in the season finale at Gas City.
Tate Martz’s most recent USAC victory had come all the way back in 2010. More than 13 years later, the three-time USAC Midwest Ford Focus Midget champion (2004-05-06) from Rushville, Ind. earned his first career victory under the USAC Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 Midget banner at Gas City. Martz became the third veteran racer to earn his first career Midwest Thunder feature triumph this season, all of whom are over the age of 40 (Matt Lux & Luke Hall).
The Coons name is synonymous in USAC racing lore with Jerry Coons Jr. earning a total of four career national championships with the club in his Triple Crown career. The next generation of the Coons racing family entered victory lane for the first time in USAC competition when Jerry’s son, Cale Coons (Greencastle, Ind.), raced to his first career USAC Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 Midget victory in September at Montpelier and was named series Rookie of the Year.
Series stalwarts West Pinkerton and Chett Gehrke each returned to the win column in 2023 with dubs on back-to-back nights when the series ran in conjunction with USAC NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week Presented By Honest Abe Roofing. Pinkerton (Reynolds, Ind.) made only two starts on the year, finishing first at Gas City then finishing as the runner-up to winner Gehrke (Broken Arrow, Okla.) at Kokomo.
Wigal topped all drivers with 107 laps led, five fast qualifying times and eight heat race scores. Massingill led all competitors with 16 top-fives while 2022 series champion Stratton Briggs (Anna, Ohio) took third in the final standings on the strength of 18 top-ten results.
Wigal, Massingill and Briggs were among the six drivers who started all 21 feature events in 2023 along with Lux, Gunnar Lucius (Delphos, Ohio) and Abby Hohlbein (Cloverdale, Ohio).
