2004 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. finally found himself atop the season-ending point standings as he won his initial USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series championship in 2004, giving car owners Bob East and Tony Stewart the team’s third-straight series car owner title.
Steele won the opening two events of the 2004 campaign, then finished consistently among the top-10 to earn the crown. He won the pole in the Copper World Classic at Phoenix and the Big M Motorfest at Memphis and proceeded to lead all 100 laps in both contests.
Steele wasn’t done yet. He recorded quick time at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis for the 52nd running of the Hoosier Hundred, then led the first 90 laps of competition before Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. grabbed the lead and his third triumph in the event. Steele, whose 290 consecutive laps led smashed a series record, finished second.
Steele maintained his point lead, finishing seventh at Terre Haute, sixth at Richmond, seventh at Pikes Peak and ninth at Milwaukee.
The middle of the season belonged to just four drivers, with three of them winning at least twice. Brian Tyler of Parma, Mich. won the Sumar Classic at the Terre Haute Action Track after starting 22nd, while Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. scored his first Silver Crown win in the Dominic’s of New York 100 at Richmond, leading all but three laps.
Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif., who had only one top-ten in the first five races, turned it up at Pikes Peak, winning the rain-shortened Rocky Mountain Classic, the first of three-straight victories. He also won at Milwaukee, and dominated the J.D. Byrider 100 at Indianapolis Raceway Park, leading all 100 laps after starting on the pole.
Tyler triumphed once more in the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, again coming from the back of the pack, before another Tyler – this time Tyler Walker – went on a hot streak of his own.
Walker ripped past Steele on lap 81 in the Bully Hill Vineyards 100 at Nazareth and would not give up the point until the season finale. Driving for Kasey Kahne, Walker won at Nazareth and led flag-to-flag in the Ted Horn 100 at Du Quoin and the O’Reilly Tulsa 100, giving him 220 straight laps in the lead. Walker’s streak ended at Eldora Speedway, when Darland led all 50 laps in the 4-Crown Nationals for his 10th series win.
Steele finished all but two laps during the year, never finishing worse than 17th, and ended the season with a 47-point cushion over Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. Darland finished third ahead of Brian Tyler and Jason McCord.
Aaron Pierce won Rookie of the Year honors for the series while Bud Kaeding took home the Most Improved Driver award.

STEELE WIRE-TO-WIRE IN COPPER WORLD 100-MILER
Avondale, Arizona………Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. continued his dominance at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday with a wire-to-wire victory in the 27th annual Copper World Classic, leading all 100 laps in the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series opener. It was his third consecutive victory in the event.
Steele, who started on the pole for the sixth Phoenix race in seven years, showed his power with his No. 9 Ford Power Stroke Diesel Beast/Ford at the start and on the restarts, pulling away and beating Tracy Hines to the checkered flags by 2.5 seconds.
Chet Fillip equaled his best career finish with a third place showing and was followed by Aaron Pierce and Jason McCord. Pierce grabbed the race’s hard charger award after starting 33rd, picking up 29 positions.
“Things went pretty well,” Steele said after the race. “It wasn’t easy. It was about as hard as it could get, especially there at the end. Car owner Bob East asked me what my strategy was. I just told him that I liked to lead, and we would try to stay out front.
“You know, the bad thing is that you don’t know how hard to run,” Steele continued. “You have to be careful not to overuse your stuff. If you run hard, then the guys behind you are going to run hard. It’s kind of like a catch-22, which makes you run harder anyway. We just tried to set a pace without sliding the car, and that’s what we did.”
Steele set the pace but had to hold off Hines, who gained ground when the duo ran in traffic. But Steele was able to maneuver through traffic well enough to post a one-second advantage and built a lead that later reached three seconds.
“If a guy pulls out behind you to try to slingshot, you can almost feel it,” Steele said. “I felt it a couple of times and said, ‘Someone is getting ready to pass me.’ But I just figured out that it was the wind, which was kind of a relief. We’re just lucky the Ford Power Stroke Diesel went well on the restarts. That thing was good, and I think that was the key.”
Steele won the pole at a record speed of 142.197 mph, pacing the one-mile facility in 25.317 seconds. Defending series champion J.J. Yeley fought Steele early in the event but succumbed to rear end problems, finishing 23rd.
John Heydenreich of Bloomsburg, Pa. won Saturday’s 15-lap qualifying race.
The 36-car field was the largest in series history at PIR and the total purse of $115,040 was an all-time series record.

STEELE LEADS ALL 100 AT MEMPHIS
Millington, Tennessee………Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. continued his winning ways in the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series Saturday afternoon, winning the USAC Mid-South 100 at Memphis Motorsports Park. Steele is now two-for-two in the series, also having won at Phoenix in March.
Steele earned his 14th career series pole in the Ford/Power Stroke Diesel Beast co-owned by NASCAR star Tony Stewart and Bob East and proceeded to lead every lap of the 100-lap race on the 3/4-mile paved oval. The race, presented by Brim’s Snack Foods, completed the complex’s Big M Motorfest weekend of racing.
“Our car was pretty good,” commented Steele in victory lane. “My hat is off to Bob East and the whole crew. We unloaded and were not very good, but we kept fighting it and made a lot of changes. I guess we went the right way.”
Trailing Steele at the checkered flag were Jason McCord, Bobby East, P.J. Jones, Eric Gordon, Michael Lewis, John Heydenreich, Russ Gamester, Aaron Fike and Tracy Hines.
Steele averaged 105.939 mph in the race slowed by only two minor cautions for 12 laps.
Jimmy Kite won the 15-lap qualifying race. Driver Jeff Gardner of Fresno, Calif. was transported to a Memphis hospital suffering pains in his side after crashing during the 15-lapper.

DAVE DARLAND TAKES THIRD HOOSIER HUNDRED
Indianapolis, Indiana………Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. scored his third Hoosier Hundred victory Friday night, leading the final 10 laps of the 100-mile event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Darland passed runner-up and pole-starter Dave Steele on lap 90 after Steele took charge from the onset. Once in the lead, Darland was never challenged in his Foxco, Inc./Jarvis Enterprises Beast/Foxco Chevy.
“This is great,” Darland exclaimed. “This is my third Hoosier Hundred and in 1995 I won the Hulman Hundred here too. I beat some pretty tough competitors through the years in this race, and (car owner) Galen Fox always gives me good cars on one-mile dirt tracks, and they’re really fast. Tonight was no exception.”
Darland, who started sixth, moved his way to third early and ran behind Aaron Fike for more than half the race. While the two ran in second and third, Steele pulled away, looking for his first dirt victory after starting on the pole for the third straight race.
Steele, who had never led a lap in Weld Racing Silver Crown Series action on dirt, led the first 90 laps, which extended his consecutive laps led count to 290, a new series record. The mark surpassed that of Mario Andretti, who had led 252 straight laps in 1974.
The race was halted on lap 72 when Dane Carter hit the outside wall coming out of turn four, which caused damage to the track’s fence. Carter escaped the accident unscathed. During the red flag, Darland made a tire change in hopes of improving his position.
When the race resumed, Darland stayed with Steele, allowed him some breathing room, then caught Steele again in the final 20 laps. As the two drivers entered the turns, Darland gained an advantage and finally pulled to the inside of Steele on lap 90. From there, he led to the finish.
“Through (turns) one and two, I was really hooked up, but between three and four, I had to be careful getting in not to wash out,” Darland said. “That’s eventually how I got past Steele. He pushed the front end up just off the bottom groove enough for me to take advantage of it.”
John Heydenreich finished third, while Teddy Beach scored a career-best fourth in the series, followed by Kevin Huntley, who finished fifth.
Tom Capie won the 15-mile qualifying race in front of a sizeable crowd.
Steele maintained his lead in the point standings and increased his advantage to 59 points over Jason McCord.

TYLER FROM 22ND TO 1ST AT SUMAR CLASSIC
Terre Haute, Indiana………Brian Tyler of Parma, Mich. scored a sensational victory in the Terre Haute First Financial Bank Sumar Classic USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown feature on June 5 at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, coming from 22nd starting position to post the win.
Tyler's drive through the field on the ½-mile dirt track was reminiscent of his drive in the May 28 Hoosier Hundred in Indianapolis, Ind. where he came from 19th to third before encountering problems in the closing laps.
"We had a magneto problem in qualifying and my crew and I went to work to fix it, and in the race, we had no further problems," said Tyler after the race. "The car just kept getting faster and faster. I figured this place kind of owed me one after running out of fuel here last year while running third late in the race."
The victory was Tyler's seventh in series competition as he led the final 10 laps in his Dellen Automotive Family/Utility Peterbilt Beast/Chevy.
Dave Darland led the first 90 laps but faded to third in the closing laps as the track groove changed.
Trailing Tyler at the checkered flag were pole winner Levi Jones, Darland, Cory Kruseman and Bud Kaeding.
Cary Faas won the 15-lap qualifying race in which Tyler finished second.
Dave Steele, who finished seventh in the 100-lap race, continues to lead the series standings.

EAST COMPLETES CYCLE WITH RICHMOND TRIUMPH
Richmond, Virginia……… Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. became the first driver in 2004 to claim victories in all three USAC National racing series, winning Saturday night’s Dominic’s of New York 100 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.
East, the son of noted car builder Bob East, led all but the first three laps of the 100-lap USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown race at the 3/4-mile paved oval. He caught early leader Jason McCord on lap four and held off repeated challenges from runner-up Brian Tyler to put his Power Stroke Diesel/Ford Beast/Ford into victory lane. The win followed previous 2004 USAC victories in National Sprint Car and Midget Car competition.
Trailing East and Tyler at the checkered flag were pole starter Jerry Coons Jr., McCord, Bud Kaeding, Dave Steele, J.J. Yeley, Eric Gordon, Dave Darland and Dane Carter. Coons won the pole Friday with a speed of 130.574 mph.
Saturday night’s race was interrupted six times by yellow flags but there were no driver injuries in any of the incidents.
Teddy Beach won Friday’s 15-lap qualifying race.

DRAKE REPEATS IN "ROCKY MOUNTAIN CLASSIC 100
Fountain, Colorado………Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. repeated as the winner of the King Soopers Rocky Mountain Classic USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown race at Pikes Peak international Raceway on Sunday. The race was originally scheduled for 100 miles, but was shortened to 60, due to afternoon rain and impending darkness.
Drake assumed the lead on lap 43 when Dane Carter, who led the first 42 laps from the pole starting position, encountered engine problems. Drake then led the final 18 laps in his Team Mopar Beast/Mopar to claim the $14,560 winner’s share of the $82,105 total purse.
“I almost ran over Carter on a restart,” commented Drake in victory lane after saying Carter’s car had been smoking and was slow on the restart. “There was no contact, so everything was okay. The darkness wasn’t bad, and vision was never a problem. The rain also didn’t seem to hurt the track much.”
Trailing Drake at the finish were Bobby Santos, who started 20th, Aaron Pierce, Bud Kaeding and J.J. Yeley.
Carter qualified at 140.812 mph on Saturday but failed to finish Sunday’s race.
Dave Steele finished seventh but continues to lead the Weld Racing standings. Steele won Sunday’s 20-mile Valvoline National Sprint Car race and 20-mile National/Western Midget car race at the 1-mile paved oval.
Ron Gregory won the 15-lap qualifying race which preceded the 60-mile finale.

MILWAUKEE MILE 100 FOR JAY DRAKE
Milwaukee, Wisconsin………Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. earned his second consecutive USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown triumph Saturday afternoon, winning the Milwaukee Mile 100 at the famed one-mile paved Wisconsin State Fair oval.
Drake took the lead from pole starter Bobby East on lap 27 and led the rest of the way in his Team Mopar Beast/Mopar fielded by George Snider and NASCAR star Tony Stewart. Drake also won on July 4 at Pikes Peak and now ranks seventh in the new series standings.
“I protected my tires and kept my car straight,” commented Drake after the win. “I could have run a little harder but, fortunately, I didn’t have a real challenge at the end. My team gave me a great car. I’d like to stay and talk but my plane will leave without me.”
The last quote was regarding the plane he had to rush to catch which was flying him to Indiana to compete in Saturday night’s Valvoline Indiana Sprint Week finale at the Terre Haute Action Track.
Trailing Drake at the checkered flag were Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind., Chet Fillip of Indianapolis, Ind, Brian Tyler of Parma, Mich. and Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. Tyler came from the 28th starting spot to earn the Hard Charger award.
East won the pole Friday with his speed of 130.606 mph and led the first six laps. J.J. Yeley then led for 15 laps before pitting, relinquishing the lead back to East.
Yeley had won the 30-mile USAC National Midget race which preceded the 100-mile Silver Crown race, beating Dave Steele by a half-car length after a spirited duel with Steele and East.

DRAKE DOMINATES J.D. BYRIDER 100 AT IRP
Indianapolis, Ind..…….Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. captured Thursday night’s J.D. Byrider 100 USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown race at Indianapolis Raceway Park, opening the track’s Kroger SpeedFest activity.
Drake won the pole starting position in his Team Mopar/Vital Express Eagle/Mopar, owned by George Snider and NASCAR star Tony Stewart, then proceeded to lead all 100 laps for the victory.
“I finally got the monkey off my back,” commented Drake in victory lane, referring to his past IRP success which has failed to produce a feature win in various types of racing. “I’m pretty happy. If I’d just won the pole and went home, I’d probably be happy. I’d only won two of the Silver Crown races before this year and now we’ve won three in a row. That’s pretty good!”
Drake’s victories at Pikes Peak on July 4, Milwaukee, on July 24, and on this night, make him the first driver in series history to win three straight back-to-back-to-back on pavement.
Dave Darland finished three seconds behind at the checkered flag and was followed by Jason McCord, Eric Gordon and NASCAR driver/past Silver Crown Champion Dave Blaney. The race was Blaney’s first in the series in six years.
Dave Steele, Mike Bliss and J.J. Yeley met with varying degrees of success. Steele finished 11th to retain the series point lead, while Bliss completed 71 laps before losing an engine and Yeley failed to earn a starting berth, finishing seventh in the qualifying race.

21ST-1ST FOR TYLER IN BETTENHAUSEN 100
Springfield, Ill...…….Brian Tyler of Parma, Mich. stormed from 21st starting position to take the lead on the 48th lap of Saturday’s Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and went on to win the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown race by three seconds over runner-up Rich Tobias Jr.
Tyler won the qualifying race which preceded the 100-miler, then led the final 53 miles of the race in his Dellen Automotive Family/Utility Peterbilt Beast/Chevy. The win was the eighth of his Silver Crown career and his second this season as he solidified his fourth-place point ranking.
“Every time we go out on dirt, we keep getting better and better,” said Tyler in victory lane. “I’m not worried about the points, I’m here to win and the points will take care of themselves. I knew on the lap 48 restart if I was going to get Tobias it would be on the front stretch. I got a really good start and made a great entry into turn one.”
Trailing Tyler and Tobias at the checkered flag was pole starter Jerry Coons Jr., who had finished second at Springfield the last three years.
John Heydenreich and Matt Westfall rounded out the top-five at the finish, while series point leader Dave Steele was seventh and holds a 77-point lead.
Jay Drake’s bid for a record-tying fourth consecutive series victory fell short as he finished 14th, one lap in arrears after starting 10th.
Only two yellows slowed the event, a blown engine and a blown tire.

WALKER GETS 1ST SILVER CROWN WIN AT NAZARETH
Nazareth, Pennsylvania………Tyler Walker of Los Angeles, Calif. finally found the winners circle in the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series Sunday afternoon, winning the Bully Hill Vineyards 100 at Nazareth Speedway in his Curb Records/Brown & Miller Plumbing Beast/Mopar.
Walker, who had three previous third-place career finishes, gave car owner Kasey Kahne his second consecutive Nazareth triumph. Kahne won last year’s race in a driving role.
“The car was great all day,” Walker said in victory lane. “I used a little of my tires trying to catch Dave (Steele, the pole winner and race leader) but I got a run off the last corner by going wide and staying there. Once I got by, it was hard for him to get past me. This has been a long time coming (his 28th career start). I haven’t finished a race this year, so I finally finish one and I win. I guess that’s pretty good.”
Steele, of Tampa, Fla., led the first 80 miles of the race after winning the pole at 135.140 mph. Walker made his winning move on lap 81 and stayed there until the checkered flag despite pressure from Steele in the closing laps.
Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. finished third ahead of Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. and Dane Carter of Brownsburg, Ind.
Four cautions slowed the race as Walker averaged 103.043 mph for the 100 miles.
Steele’s victory leaves him with a 100-point lead over Bud Kaeding, who finished sixth Sunday.
Trailing Kaeding in Sunday’s top-10 were Tracy Hines, Russ Gamester, Eric Gordon and John Heydenreich.

WALKER REPEATS WITH WIN AT Du QUOIN’S TED HORN 100
Du Quoin, Illinois………Tyler Walker of Los Angeles, Calif. dominated Sunday night’s “Ted Horn 100” at the one-mile dirt Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds, leading all 100 miles in his Curb Records/Brown & Miller Plumbing JEI/Dodge.
The victory was the second in a row for Walker, who drives for NASCAR star Kasey Kahne and won last week’s 100-miler at Nazareth, Pa. on the pavement.
“To run all 100 laps in the lead was awesome. I hated to see the late yellows, but I had saved the tires enough that I could run hard at the end. To come out and break the track record by a half-second was great!”
Walker erased Teddy Beach’s one-year-old qualifying record with a lap at 123.550 mph to win the pole for the 100-mile race. He had built nearly a half-lap lead before the late cautions.
Brian Tyler finished second ahead of Tracy Hines, Kevin Huntley and Paul White as the top five cars were on the lead lap at the end.
Series point leader Dave Steele emerged with an 80-point lead over Bud Kaeding going into a September 18 race at Tulsa, Okla. Steele finished 17th, while Kaeding garnered the hard charger award for his drive from 18th to eighth.

WALKER 3-FOR-3 AFTER TULSA 100 TRIUMPH
Tulsa, Oklahoma………Tyler Walker of Los Angeles, Calif. gave NASCAR star and Silver Crown car owner Kasey Kahne the team’s third straight USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown triumph Saturday night at the Tulsa (Okla.) Fairgrounds Motorplex.
Walker led all 100 laps of the O’Reilly Tulsa 100 presented by Flowmaster around the 3/4-mile dirt oval in his Curb Records/Brown & Miller Plumbing JEI/Stanton Dodge.
Walker also won at Nazareth, Pa. on August 29 and Du Quoin, Ill. on September 5 and has now led the last 220 laps of series competition.
After performing his signature back-flip in victory lane, Walker remarked, “The Dodge ran really well. Last year, I thought I had a good shot at winning, but this year, we led it all the way. It was frustrating missing the pole, but we got a great start.”
Trailing Walker at the checkered flag were Rich Tobias Jr., defending race winner Bud Kaeding, pole winner Jay Drake and Jason McCord.

DARLAND NOW A 4-CROWN TRIPLE CROWN CHAMP; STEELE CLAIMS SILVER CROWN TITLE
Rossburg, Ohio………Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. led all 50 laps to win Saturday night’s 4-Crown Nationals feature event at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, while Dave Steele emerged as the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Champion after his 16th place finish.
Steele, who drives for car owners Tony Stewart and Bob East, earned his first-ever USAC National driving title with a 47-point cushion over Bud Kaeding, who finished 13th at Eldora.
“The track was perfect,” said Darland. “I love it when it’s like this. My car owner (Galen Fox) gave me a great car and we just got a new engine with a lot of power.”
Darland finished 1.22 seconds ahead of Kevin Huntley at the checkered flag. Mike Brecht, Rich Tobias Jr. and Levi Jones rounded out the top-five at the finish.
Darland also won Saturday night’s 25-lap USAC Midget feature but flipped during the 30-lap USAC Sprint race while running second. Dickie Gaines won the Sprint car feature.
