1986 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW

Jack Hewitt was invincible on the dirt as he obliterated the opposition to win the 1986 Valvoline USAC Silver Crown championship, winning six times in seven starts – his only loss coming on the pavement at Indianapolis Raceway Park!

Jack and the J.W. Hunt Produce Chevy fielded by Bob Hampshire annihilated the competition on the dirt ovals and he became the first driver since Al Unser in 1970 to win the “Big 3” – Springfield, Du Quoin and the Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds back-to-back-to-back.

In most cases, it was merely a question of whether he would lap the entire field by race’s end.  At Maryland’s Hagerstown Speedway in June, he nearly lapped the entire field twice in a virtuoso performance.

Jack nearly spun yet came back to win the series-opening Hulman Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis and never relinquished the points lead, although runner-up Steve Butler surprisingly made it interesting at times.

After Jack finished sixth at IRP in the Pepsi-Cola 150, he elected to pass on the USAC/NCRA Oklahoma City 50, giving Butler an opportunity to take over the series lead.  Steve had finished second at IRP and only trailed Jack by four points, but tire problems forced him out at Oklahoma City and Hewitt proceeded to win the final four series features.

In the finale, the 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway, Jack spun and restarted last with 15 laps remaining, but worked his way back to challenge Kenny Jacobs for the victory.  On the last lap of the 50-lapper, Jack and Kenny tangled in turn one, and while Jacobs floundered with a flat tire, Jack went on for the win.

NASCAR newcomer and former Silver Crown titlist Ken Schrader returned for the IRP pavement race and won the 150-lapper.  Bob Frey impressed many with his come-from-behind drive in Glen Niebel’s V-6 powered car, but after taking the lead from Schrader late in the race, he ran out of fuel.

A controversial tangle on the opening lap of the Oklahoma City 50-lapper left fast qualifier Jon Johnson upside down after a wild flip and Rich Vogler the target of the partisan crowd.  NCRA’s Shane Carson appeased the fans, beating Vogler to the checkered flag.  Defending series champion Rick Hood captured the previous night’s USAC vs. NCRA Challenge Race.

One of the most outstanding performances of the season came in the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield as Chuck Gurney, after replacing a blown engine, came from 31st starting position to finish second to Hewitt.

Although Hewitt won at Du Quoin, Butler’s runner-up finish there kept slim title hopes alive, but an early race tangle in the Hoosier Hundred ended those hopes.  A spectacular double flip involving Warren Mockler and Andy Hillenburg at the latter event left the track’s outer wall tarpaulin in flames but there were no serious injuries.

Hewitt led all 100 laps of the Hoosier Hundred and only Larry Rice was on the same lap with him at the checkered flag.

Trailing Hewitt and Butler in the final standings for the season were consistent top-ten finisher Tom Bigelow, Rice and Hood.

Warren Mockler earned the USAC Silver Crown Most Improved Driver honors while Kenny Jacobs brought home the series Rookie of the Year award.

HEWITT SPINS, THEN WINS HULMAN HUNDRED

Indianapolis, Indiana………Jack Hewitt drove the Summer Days Tanning Salon Chevy to victory in the May 23 Hulman Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and grabbed the early point lead in the 1986 Valvoline USAC Silver Crown series.

Hewitt motored past Billy Engelhart on the 26th lap of the 60-mile race and led the rest of the way, with Engelhart taking second ahead of Rich Vogler, Steve Butler and 25th starting Tom Bigelow.

Engelhart, who joined Larry Rice as winners of the two 15-mile qualifying races and started next to Rice on the front row for the 60-mile feature, led the first 25 miles before yielding to Hewitt’s charge.  Jack earned $8,000 for his victory.

Jack Ziegler, Shane Carson and Mike Winblad all flipped during the racing program, with no serious injuries resulting.  Ziegler and Carson were treated at a local hospital and released.

HEWITT LAPS THE FIELD AT HAGERSTOWN 100

Hagerstown, Maryland………Jack Hewitt led all 100 laps and lapped the entire field en route to a dominating victory in the June 8 Valvoline USAC Silver Crown Championship race at Hagerstown Speedway.

His Summer Days Tanning Salon team was rewarded to the tune of $6,300, which included $1,800 worth of bonuses posted by J.W. Hunt, one of his car’s sponsors.

Nearly a lap-and-a-half behind at the checkered flag was Jac Haudenschild, with third-place Dave Blaney two laps in arrears.  Steve Butler was fourth and Duke Cook, in an impressive run, was fifth.

The Hagerstown race originally scheduled for June 6, but rain forced the postponement to June 8.

SCHRADER & SEYMOUR TAKE 2ND PEPSI-COLA 150 AT IRP

Clermont, Indiana………Ken Schrader drove the Seymour Enterprises Chevy to victory in the Pepsi-Cola 150 at Indianapolis Raceway Park on July 13, surviving challenges from both Bob Frey and Steve Butler in the closing laps.

The 150-lap Valvoline USAC Silver Crown Championship race was run without a caution flag and Schrader averaged 97.611 mph.

Butler, making his pavement racing debut, finished second and closed to within just four points of series point leader Jack Hewitt, who placed sixth after starting 21st.

Butler won the Jonathan Byrd’s Kentucky Fried Chicken Qualifying Race, but it was Frey who brought the fans to their feet with his late-race drive in the 150-lapper aboard the Ledford Construction/Glen Niebel V-6 Chevy.  Frey came from a half-lap behind to catch Schrader 12 laps from the finish and take the lead.  Three laps later, however, Frey dropped to second as his car began to run out of fuel and he eventually dropped out with five laps remaining.

Gary Bettenhausen set a new one-lap track qualifying record and led the first 40 laps, but he was one of several drivers who pitted, and he placed eighth as a result.

Pre-race favorites Rich Vogler and Sheldon Kinser were never a factor, Kinser spinning in oil and crashing during the Qualifying Race and Vogler losing an engine in warmups before borrowing a ride for the Qualifying Race, which he failed to finish.

CARSON GETS FIRST 1ST AT OKLAHOMA CITY

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma………Shane Carson drove his Gambler Competition Chevy to an emotionally charged victory in the 50-lap Valvoline USAC Silver Crown feature at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Speedway on July 20.

Starting fourth in the 24-car field, Carson took the lead on the 40th lap when leader Larry Rice was forced out with power steering problems.

Carson’s victory capped a two-day racing program at the ½-mile dirt oval and earned his team $5,310.

Rich Vogler finished second after an eventful drive in the Coors Light/Solar Sources machine.  Rich and fast qualifier Jon Johnson of Utica, Kans. tangled exiting turn two on the opening lap of the race, resulting in Johnson’s machine flipping over the back straightaway guardrail, then vaulting end-over-end and landing back on the racetrack.

Johnson, who was battling Vogler for the lead at the time, was miraculously uninjured.

Vogler assumed the lead on the restart but faded in the middle stages of the race, then came from 10th to second in the closing laps.

NCRA veteran Garry Lee Maier led for 11 laps before Rice took command, but Carson was not to be denied, winning the race by a quarter of a lap.

Gary Bettenhausen was third, with Mike Peters fourth and defending series and Oklahoma City race champ Rick Hood fifth.

Silver Crown point leader Jack Hewitt did not compete, but series runner-up Steve Butler was 20th and gained one point on the leader.

HEWITT STILL UNDEFEATED ON DIRT, WINS TONY BETTENHAUSEN 100 AT SPRINGFIELD

Springfield, Illinois………Jack Hewitt and the J.W. Hunt Produce Chevy remained undefeated on the dirt in 1986, winning the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield on August 16.

Hewitt battled with Gary Bettenhausen for the first 28 laps before taking the lead for good on lap 29.

Bettenhausen eventually fell out of the race with mechanical problems at halfway, while defending race winner Chuck Gurney held the fans’ attention with his drive to second place.

Gurney’s engine let go during warmups and his crew changed engines just in time to assume the 31st starting spot as an added promoter’s option.

George Snider won the pole for the 100-mile race but lost an engine after 81 miles.

Hewitt averaged 91.860 mph as only four yellow flags slowed the race.

Steve Butler earned the race’s hard luck award when he hit the wall on the 20th lap while running up front and Brent Kaeding, who finished seventh, was voted the Rookie of the Race.

HEWITT STAYS UNDEFEATED ON DIRT WITH Du QUOIN VICTORY

Du Quoin, Illinois………Jack Hewitt of Troy, Ohio remained undefeated on the dirt in his J.W. Hunt Produce Silver Crown car, winning the Labor Day 100-mile race at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds on September 1.

Hewitt started 11th in the 32-car field but led the final 47 miles of the race to beat Steve Butler and George Snider to the checkered flag.

The win extended Jack’s lead in the series standings and Butler’s runner-up finish left him holding the number two spot in points.

Chuck Gurney led eight drivers who broke the old one-lap track qualifying record and earned the pole starting spot with a 115.146 mph lap in his Plastic Express Chevy but battled second starting Kenny Jacobs and third starting Gary Bettenhausen in the early laps.

Gurney retired after 60 miles, with Bettenhausen and Jacobs both dropping out in the final 20 miles.

Hewitt earned a $2,000 bonus posted for the winner by J.W. Hunt, bringing his prize money total to $10,000 for the day.

HEWITT, HAMPSHIRE, HUNT ADD HOOSIER HUNDRED TO WIN LIST

Indianapolis, Indiana………Jack Hewitt of Troy, Ohio continued to make shambles of his Valvoline USAC Silver Crown opposition on September 13, scoring an impressive wire-to-wire victory in the tradition-rich Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

Hewitt started fourth in the 100-mile race but left no doubt as to who would win from the drop of the green flag to the waving of the checkered, much as he had done in every dirt track Silver Crown race throughout the 1986 season.

The Hoosier Hundred victory was worth $12,500 to Hewitt’s Bob Hampshire/J.W. Hunt Produce team, which included $4,500 in lap prizes, $1,000 of which was posted for lap No. 63 by Jack’s sponsor – J.W. Hunt.

Hewitt’s dominance on the dirt has been phenomenal and he’s the first driver since Al Unser in 1970 to win the Springfield, Du Quoin and Indianapolis events back-to-back-to-back in August and September.

Jack wrapped up the 1986 series championship with his Hoosier Hundred triumph, his fifth in six series starts.  His only loss in the car came on the Indianapolis Raceway Park pavement in July.

Steve Butler needed to win the September 13 race and have Jack drop out to have a chance at catching the points leader, but the tables turned early as Steve was eliminated on the second lap of the 100-miler when he and Johnny Parsons tangled in turn three, Parsons flipped but was uninjured.

The Parsons-Butler tangle was the first of two which brought the 34th running of the Hoosier Hundred to a screeching halt.  On lap seven, Warren Mockler and Andy Hillenburg brought out the red flag when they tangled in turn three and the ensuing double flip left part of the tarpaulin hanging on the outside fence in flames.  Mockler suffered only minor burns and escaped serious injury while Hillenburg was treated at Indianapolis’ Methodist Hospital for a broken shoulder blade and later released.

Larry Rice, who started on the pole with the day’s fastest qualifying time, drove a great race to finish second but nearly succumbed to being lapped by the flying Hewitt, a late-race yellow flag helping keep Larry on the same lap.

Following Rice, who won the Hoosier Hundred in 1981, were former race winners Chuck Gurney, Bobby Olivero and Tom Bigelow.

Pre-race favorites Sheldon Kinser, Gary Bettenhausen and Rick Hood were all forced out of competition with mechanical problems at just past halfway.

4-CROWN FINALE AT ELDORA BELONGS TO UNBEATABLE HEWITT

Rossburg, Ohio………Jack Hewitt completed the 1986 Valvoline USAC Silver Crown series the same way he started it – in victory lane – as he drove the J.W. Hunt Produce machine to a 50-lap triumph in the 4-Crown Nationals windup at Eldora Speedway.

Jack trailed leader Kenny Jacobs until the final lap when he drove hard into turn one and collected Jacobs.  The ensuing tangle left Jacobs with a flat right rear tire and he dropped to fourth at the checkered flag, while an apologetic Hewitt went on to the victory.  The win was Hewitt’s sixth in six dirt track Silver Crown races in 1986.

Hewitt had spun while trying to pass leader Sheldon Kinser with just 15 laps to go, and after restarting at the back of the pack, worked his way back into contention.

Billy Engelhart wound up second in the 50-lapper, with Kinser third after replacing a flat tire suffered on the 38th lap.

Jacobs was the fastest qualifier for the Silver Crown event, with Bobby Adkins winning the 20-lap Tom Stenger Ford Truck Center, Inc. Qualifying Race.
