USAC SOUTHWEST SPRINT CARS RUMBLE AT QUEEN CREEK SATURDAY
The popular USAC SouthWest Sprint Cars are set to invade Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway this Saturday, October 15th. Promoted by Jonah Trussel and located within ET Motopark, the sixteenth point race will also feature Sport Mods, ModLites, and Pure Stocks. Since April 13, 2013, twenty-two USAC SouthWest Sprint Car races have been held at Arizona Speedway. Three-time and defending series champion R.J. Johnson leads all drivers with thirteen wins followed by “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. (5), Stevie Sussex (2), “The Magic Man” Mike Martin (1), and Josh Pelkey (1). This season, Johnson has won three of the five previous Queen Creek visits and Stevie Sussex claimed the other two wins, including the September 17th event.
Entering Saturday’s show, R.J. Johnson (Tempe, Arizona) has a 113-point lead over the competition. Driving Bill Michael’s #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson finished third at Queen Creek on September 17th. To date, the second generation driver has posted ten feature wins, nine heat race victories, six top-qualifier awards, twenty-three top-10 finishes, and 230 feature laps led to his credit. R.J. is inching closer to another title and will be looking for his series leading 43rd main event victory this Saturday night.
“Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. (Buckeye, Arizona) ranks second in the USAC SouthWest point chase. Racing the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis claimed fourth in the September 17th feature. At press time, the five-time Arizona champion has eleven heat race victories, three top-qualifier awards, one hard charger award, twenty-two top-10 finishes, and 39 feature laps led in the campaign. With thirteen wins, “Chargin” Charles is second on the series win list and he will have his sights on adding another trophy to his collection.
Matt Rossi (Glendale, Arizona) sits third in the chase for the championship. Piloting the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / IWR Spike, Rossi charged from eleventh to score fifth at Queen Creek. To date, the former Western World 360 Champion has three heat race victories, one semi-main win, twelve top-10 finishes, and thirteen feature laps led on the year. Currently tied with Brady Bacon, Dave Darland, and Rick Ziehl for ninth on the USAC SouthWest win list, Matt will be looking to earn his fourth victory.
“The Magic Man” Mike Martin (Yuma, Arizona) is fourth in the point standings. Driving his #16 Sherwin-Williams / Boulevard Truck Maxim, Martin scored fourteenth at Queen Creek on September 17th. At press time, the former Hall of Fame Classic winner has six heat race victories, one top-qualifier award, two hard charger awards, fifteen top-10 finishes, and 39 feature laps led on the season. “The Magic Man” is tied with Josh Pelkey for fifth on the series win list and will have his sights on claiming the Arizona Speedway triumph.
“The Bull” Tye Mihocko (Peoria, Arizona) ranks fifth in the championship point chase. Piloting the family owned #5 Property Solutions / Michael Most Trucking entry, Mihocko charged from tenth to score sixth at Arizona Speedway. To date, the young driver has posted one top-qualifier award, one hard charger award, and fourteen top-10 finishes in the campaign. Tye will be looking to breakthrough and claim the first USAC SouthWest triumph of his career at Queen Creek.
Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Dennis Gile, Nick Aiuto, Chris Bonneau, Brian Hosford, Andy Reinbold, Landon Cling, “The Radio Flyer” Bruce St. James, Michael Curtis, Matt Lundy, Tom Ogle, and more.
