SILVER CROWN SERIES HEADED FOR SALEM AUGUST 13; SWANSONS 1-2 AGAIN IN “RICH VOGLER CLASSIC”
Kody Swanson, fresh from last Thursday night’s “Rich Vogler Classic” victory at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind., will lead the USAC Silver Crown Series back to Salem (Ind.) Speedway for the first time in 28 years when the Scott County Visitors Commission “Joe James-Pat O’Connor Memorial” unfolds at the .555-mile paved oval.
Swanson dominated Thursday’s 100-lap race at LOR in his Radio Hospital/Champion Oil Beast/Hampshire Chevy. The win was his second of the season following his “Hoosier Hundred” victory at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May. He emerged from Thursday’s race with a seven-point lead over Chris Windom, who was fifth at LOR.
The victory was Kody’s 14th career win in the Silver Crown Series, tying him for fifth all-time with Dave Darland and Chuck Gurney.
Thursday’s event also included the fifth annual induction for the USAC Hall of Fame. Inductees included (in alphabetical order) Steve Butler, Russ Clendenen, Jimmy Davies, Willie Davis, Bob Higman, Tommy Hinnershitz, Dick King, Rick Mears, Pat O’Connor, Kevin Olson, Tony Stewart and Bob Tattersall.
Kody was the ProSource fast qualifier and was flanked on the front row by former Silver Crown champion and NASCAR veteran Ryan Newman. Newman would finish sixth in the 100-lapper.
Kody’s younger brother, Tanner Swanson, had won five of the past six Silver Crown races at LOR coming into last Thursday night’s race. This time around, he would finish second, while Jerry Coons Jr., Bobby Santos and Windom rounded out the “top-five” at the checkered flag.
Casey Shuman finished 11th to claim the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger award.
