“HORN-SCHINDLER MEMORIAL” AT “THE GROVE” JUNE 10; SWANSON BROTHERS SWEEP

“HORN-SCHINDLER MEMORIAL” AT “THE GROVE” JUNE 10; SWANSON BROTHERS SWEEP

The “Horn-Schindler Memorial” at the famed Williams Grove, Pa. Speedway is next up for USAC’s Silver Crown Championship series June 10 after back-to-back races last week that were captured by the Swanson brothers of California.

Kody Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif. earned his third consecutive “Hoosier Hundred” triumph in Thursday’s 62nd running of the classic at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Friday night, his brother Tanner sped to his fifth victory in his last six Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis Silver Crown starts, winning the “Carb Night Classic” while Kody took second.

Kody’s weekend vaulted him back into the series point lead entering the Williams Grove return, which marks the first time the series has competed at the historic half-mile oval since Eddie Leavitt’s 1981 victory. Kody has a 24-point lead over Chris Windom in the latest point tally.

The June 10 race will be the “Grove’s” third time hosting the Silver Crown series. Sheldon Kinser won the debut there in 1980. The race honors the legacy of racers Ted Horn and Bill Schindler.  Williams Grove Speedway is no stranger to champ car racing, hosting AAA National Championship racing in 1946 and non-points paying champ car races annually from 1949 to 1955, with USAC being the sanctioning body from 1956 to 1959.  The most recent USAC event hosted by Williams Grove was a National Sprint Car race won by Billy Pauch in 1996.

Kody Swanson’s Hoosier Hundred win marked only the third time a driver has swept three straight classics. Jimmy Bryan won three straight rom 1954-1956 and Al Unser won fourth straight from 1970-1973. Swanson piloted the Radio Hospital/Champion Oil Maxim/Hampshire Chevy to the win over Shane Cottle, Jerry Coons Jr., Bryan Clauson and Chris Windom. He was the fourth race leader, grabbing the top spot on lap 67 from Cottle and leading the final 34 miles.

Tanner trailed Bobby Santos for the first 80 laps of Saturday’s “Carb Night Classic” before pacing the final 20 in his Bowman Properties/Bowman-Elmore Racing Beast/Kistler Chevy. Trailing runner-up Kody were Windom, Robert Stout and Aaron Pierce.

ProSource fast qualifiers last weekend were Brady Bacon at the Indy mile and Santos at Lucas Oil Raceway. KSE Racing Products Hard Chargers were Terry James (Hoosier Hundred) and Shane Cockrum (Carb Night Classic).
