BACK-TO-BACK INDIANA RACES NEXT FOR SILVER CROWN; WEATHER FORCES TOLEDO CANCELLATION
The excitement of the month of May in Indiana is upon us and with it comes a pair of back-to-back USAC Silver Crown races showcasing talents on both dirt and paved surfaces. The May 26 “Hoosier Hundred” and the May 27 “Carb Night Classic…The Race Before the 500” are certain to mold the foundation for the 2016 series championship and produce memorable events as the racing capital gears up for the historic 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Last Saturday night’s second scheduled round of the 2016 Silver Crown series – the “Hemelgarn Racing/Super Fitness Rollie Beale Classic” at the Toledo, Ohio Speedway – was rained out. USAC and track officials are continuing to discuss a possible rescheduling of the race.
The 64-year-old “Hoosier Hundred” is up next, renewing one of America’s most revered dirt-track racing traditions. The 100-mile race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis has long been considered a true challenge for America’s short-track racing stars and this year’s classic will add to that legacy. The race is scheduled for Thursday night, May 26.
Lucas Oil Raceway’s “Carb Night Classic…The Race Before the 500” occupies the Friday night, May 27 slot on the calendar. The 100-lap contest on the .686-mile paved oval extends the great history of the Brownsburg, Ind. complex, which has hosted numerous USAC events since the track’s inception in 1961.
Defending two-time “Hoosier Hundred” champion Kody Swanson is third in the latest series points and is in search of a record third-consecutive series title. His brother, Tanner, is the defending winner of the race now dubbed the “Carb Night Classic” and he has won four of the last five Silver Crown features at LOR.
Justin Grant enters the late-may calendar as the Silver Crown point leader, although C.J. Leary heads for the two-race swing following his initial series win in the “Sumar Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track on April 3.
Recent two-time “Hoosier Hundred” champ Jerry Coons, Jr. (2011-12) and Bobby Santos, who claimed a pair of victories at Lucas Oil Raceway in 2012, are expected to be challengers in the respective races.
