SW SPRINTS VISIT CENTRAL ARIZONA SPEEDWAY SATURDAY;
“KRC SAFETY FALL SHOOTOUT” TO JACE VANDERWEERD
R.J. Johnson and Charles Davis Jr. continue their torrid battle for the 2015 USAC Southwest Sprint Car championship in this Saturday’s “Central Arizona Student Night” racing program at Central Arizona Speedway in Casa Grande, Ariz.
Davis won last year’s Casa Grande outing, while Johnson was third. Johnson, seeking a third consecutive Southwest title, has a 61-point lead entering Saturday’s race with 74 points available.
The winningest drivers in USAC’s Arizona racing history, Johnson has 26 career Arizona wins and Davis has 17. Davis has a pair of Casa Grande wins, while Johnson and Matt Rossi each have one.
Jace Vander Weerd of Visalia, Calif. won Saturday night’s USAC West Coast Sprint “KRC Safety Fall Shootout” at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. He passed Kyle Smith on lap two of the 30-lap race and led the rest of the way for his second consecutive series win. D.J. Johnson finished second in what amounted to a “photo-finish,” while Bud Kaeding was third ahead of Ryan Bernal and Richard Vander Weerd.
The USAC West Coast season concludes with the November 19-21 “Western World Championships” at USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.
