WEST COAST SPRINTS AT TULARE SATURDAY
SUSSEX, JOHNSON SPLIT “SALUTE TO INDY” GLORY
Danny Faria Jr. leads the USAC West Coast Sprint cars to Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. Saturday night and he hopes to repeat his victory of two weeks ago at the same track. He enters the race with a 52-point lead over Ryan Bernal, a three-time winner so far this season.
Series point leader R.J. Johnson and Stevie Sussex recorded USAC Southwest Sprint Car feature victories in last week’s two-night “Salute to Indy” at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz.
Johnson’s victory on Sunday night was his 23rd under USAC sanction in the state of Arizona as he passed Mike Colegrove on the fourth lap and led the final 27 laps in his Michaels entry. Sussex took second ahead of Mike Colegrove, Matt Rossi and Charles Davis, Jr.
Sussex, of Tempe, Ariz., won Saturday night’s 30-lapper. He passed Michael Curtis on the second lap and led the rest of the way in his Quarterback Academy/Bobby Q Ellis/Shaver to beat Johnson, Josh Pelkey, Chris Bonneau and Bruce St. James.
Johnson’s Southwest point lead now stands at 80 points over Davis entering a June 13 race at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek.
