SEAVEY, GRANT & COURTNEY TRIPLE UP WITH USAC IN 2021
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Speedway, Indiana (October 20, 2021)………Logan Seavey, Justin Grant and Tyler Courtney tripled up during the 2021 USAC National season by winning main events in all three USAC National series.
It’s just the fifth time in history that at least three drivers have won feature events in all three USAC National series during the same season, and the first such occasion that’s arisen in 11 years. The feat was previously done in 1998, 2003, 2006 and 2010.
For Seavey, it was the Sutter, California driver’s first-time capturing wins in all three in 2021: Silver Crown twice at Selinsgrove, Pa. and Ohio’s Eldora Speedway; Sprint Cars thrice at Indiana’s Lawrenceburg, Gas City and Terre Haute dirt ovals; and Midgets once thus far at Lawrenceburg.
For Grant, of Ione, Calif., it’s the third time he’s accomplished the feat (2017 & 2018), and he’s now one of just eight drivers in USAC history to do it at least three times in his USAC career, joining Dave Steele, Dave Darland, Jerry Coons Jr., Tyler Courtney, Tracy Hines, Rich Vogler and J.J. Yeley.
Grant scored a Silver Crown victory on the high banks of Winchester (Ind.) Speedway this past summer in July and has also added one with the NOS Energy Drink National Midgets at Lanco in Pa., plus seven AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature wins at Ocala, Fla.; Pa.’s Grandview and Selinsgrove Speedways; Kokomo, Ind. on three different dates and at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.
Likewise, for Courtney, it was his third time experiencing the USAC trifecta after previously doing so in 2017 and 2019. All four of the Indianapolis, Indiana native’s USAC victories came at Rossburg, Ohio’s Eldora Speedway, in three different types of racecars. Courtney added Sprint wins in May and September, plus a Silver Crown triumph in June and checked off the third class with the Midget in September.
Jack Hewitt (1998) and Kyle Larson (2011) remain the only drivers to win in all three USAC National divisions on the same day, both instances which came true during the 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora.
Since the advent of the Silver Crown series in 1971, no driver has won in all three USAC National divisions more often than Dave Steele, who did the deed on six happenings, including five years in a row between 2001 and 2005.
Twenty-nine different drivers have won USAC Silver Crown, National Sprint Car and National Midget features within a single season. Between those 29, the occurrence has arisen 56 times over the past 51 seasons.
