BIGELOW’S MIDGET FOCUS NETS HIM 1984 USAC MIDGET TITLE
Tom Bigelow, who, at the time, was the winningest driver in USAC Sprint Car history, concentrated his 1984 efforts on the USAC-Jolly Rancher National Midget Series and came away with the championship after a hard-fought campaign in which he scored four feature wins in the Sandy Racing Starcraft VW.
Bigelow trailed the early point leaders until the opening race of a five-race USAC/ARDC/NEMA swing in the East, but his victory at Five Mile Point Speedway in Binghamton, N.Y. on June 22 gave him the lead in the standings and he never relinquished it. He wound up with a 52-point cushion over six-time series titlist Mel Kenyon, who, despite skipping a month of racing in June, still wound up as the series runner-up and even posed a challenge to Bigelow in the final races.
Three-time USAC Midget champ Rich Vogler opened the series with back-to-back victories at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind. to take the early lead. He held it as Alan Brown won an indoor race at Springfield, then Gene Gennetten took the outdoor opener at Little Springfield in the same city.
Gennetten then finished third behind Kevin Olson at Santa Fe as Vogler pursued other racing endeavors, and Gene moved to the top of the standings. He held the lead with an 11th place finish behind Ken Schrader at the Indiana State Fairgrounds but lost it as he again finished 11th at Indianapolis Raceway Park in the Budweiser “Night Before the 500” classic, won by Steve Lotshaw.
Jeff Nuckles, who placed second to Lotshaw at IRP, assumed the top point spot, but the series lead turned into a real dogfight after Kevin Olson’s victory at Hales Corners in early June. That left Gennetten with a one-point lead over both Nuckles and Kenneth Nichols (third at Hales Corners), with Bigelow (fourth at Hales Corners) now only three points from first place.
Jeff Nuckles drove to victory in the June 2 race at Slinger, moving into the lead, but a crash in the next race at Kokomo, while brother Jerry was taking the win, gave the series lead back to Gennetten, who finished seventh at Kokomo.
Gene, however, decided to pass on the Eastern swing, so Bigelow, now tied for second with Nuckles, went to work. Tom won at Five Mile Point, then again two races later at Airborne Park and began to build a small lead.
Nick Fornoro, Jr. gave the Easterners a victory in the June 23 Fulton feature, then Mel Kenyon ended a two-year victory drought by notching his 101st career win at Vermont’s Devil’s Bowl. Bob Cicconi closed the Eastern swing with his first USAC feature win at the Orange County Fairgrounds Speedway in Middletown, N.Y.
Kevin Olson’s victory in the main at Cleveland’s Cloverleaf Speedway on July 7, coupled with Bigelow’s ninth-place finish, tightened the point race. Olson now trailed by just three points, but his season was about to conclude.
Kevin’s next race was at Hales Corners, where he had won seven weeks earlier, but he tangled with another car and flipped end-over-end, suffering a cracked neck, cracked pelvis and two broken ribs.
Bigelow, on the other hand, came from the back of the pack to score a fantastic victory in the Hales Corners feature to assume a commanding lead in the series points.
Tom continued to expand his lead as Ken Schrader posted back-to-back victories in Springfield races, the first at Little Springfield and the second in the “Rex Easton Memorial” at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Tom finished third and eighth respectively in the two features.
Mel Kenyon, who had been recording consistent top-ten finishes in his appearances to that point, scored his 102nd career victory at the Milwaukee Mile in late August and suddenly was second in the standings, but 66 points down to Bigelow.
USAC Sprint point leader Rick Hood drove to victory in a race at Little Springfield but Bigelow put on a dazzling display of driving to beat Hood in a thriller at Granite City. The lead was back to 77 points over Kenyon.
Mel responded with a third-place finish behind Rich Vogler in the Regency “Indy Midget 500” at the Indianapolis Speedrome, as Bigelow was a non-finisher, cutting the lead back to just 39 points.
Vogler also won the prestigious “Hut Hundred” at Terre Haute as Bigelow came home third and Mel dropped out. That put the lead back up to 55 points and it appeared Bigelow was going to win the title.
Both drivers skipped the first of two races at Ascot Park, with Sleepy Tripp posting his 50th career USAC National Midget win in the main event.
That left just two West Coast races to decide the champion, the Valvoline “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Ascot Park and the subsequent “Sands Chevrolet” feature at Phoenix International Raceway.
Neither driver was impressive in either race and Bigelow wound up with the championship, but Ron Shuman scored an incredible fifth victory in six years at the “Turkey Night” classic and Rich Vogler won the series finale at Phoenix.
Vogler’s win at Phoenix, coupled with his other major triumphs during the season, boosted him into the final number three ranking. It also helped Wilke Racing to win the 1984 USAC-Jolly Rancher National Midget Car Owner’s Championship. The Wilke Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer VW scored eight wins, utilizing Olson, Schrader, Hood and Vogler.
Jeff Nuckles wound up seventh in the final standings, right behind brother Jerry, but he certainly would have been a serious threat for the series championship had he not suffered paralyzing injuries in a non-USAC-sanctioned event at Eldora in July. Jeff’s disastrous accident and brother Jerry’s subsequent departure from the series left a void which will be hard to fill. The two consistently finished together in the series standings and 1984 was no exception.
