CRA’S “SALUTE TO INDY" MAY 23 AT PERRIS;
VANDER WEERD WINS VENTURA’S “ALL COAST CHALLENGE”
Mike Spencer is back atop the standings in the AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car series and takes a six-point lead over defending series champion Damion Gardner into the May 23 “Salute to Indy” at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway.
Spencer, a five-time champion, finished seventh in Saturday night’s 40-lap “All Coast Challenge” at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway while Gardner finished 10th.
Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia, Calif. passed Matt Mitchell coming off turn four on the final lap to win at Ventura. Vander Weerd piloted his Vander Weerd Construction/Battery Worx Maxim Shark to the win in the event which drew 50 cars and drivers!
Vander Weerd was also the fastest qualifier. Mitchell finished second ahead of Austin Williams, Brody Roa and Ronnie Gardner. Danny Sheridan led the first 35 laps before Mitchell led 36-39 and Vander Weerd led the last lap.
Spencer is seeking a record sixth USAC/CRA title after sweeping championships from 2008-2012.
