QUEEN CREEK NEXT FOR SOUTHWEST SPRINTS;
PELKEY, JOHNSON SPLIT “SALUTE TO INDY” SPOTLIGHT AT CANYON
Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek, Ariz. hosts the next stop for the USAC Southwest Sprint Cars, a June 7 race at the one-third mile dirt track in suburban Phoenix.
R.J. Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz. will lead the series to Queen Creek after polishing off the field in Sunday night’s “Salute to Indy” closer at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz.
Johnson has a 10-point lead in the standings over Josh Pelkey of Peoria, who captured Saturday night’s main event at Canyon
Pelkey wheeled the Robbie and Gale Allen ABC Body Shop NAPA Maxim and caught Charles Davis Jr. on lap 23. He paced the final eight circuits to beat Stevie Sussex, Johnson, Colby Copeland and Davis.
Johnson piloted Bill Michaels’ Piggly’s at the Fair entry to victory in Sunday night’s “Salute to Indy” closer at Canyon. Johnson led the final 13 laps after passing Josh Hodges on lap 18. Hodges took second ahead of Tye Mihocko, Mike Martin and Mike Colegrove. Five drivers flipped during the 30-lap feature.
