1965 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: McGREEVY WINS ONE FOR MEL
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
A devastating, fiery crash midway through the 1965 season proved to have a lasting impact that changed the course of multiple drivers’ lives, careers and the USAC National Midget division in its 10th year of competition.
Reigning Midget champion Mel Kenyon’s USAC Championship Car incident at Langhorne (Pa.) Speedway on June 20 resulted in severe burns and the loss of the fingers on his left hand. At the time, Kenyon had already scored seven wins and was leading the standings as he pursued a second consecutive series championship.
With Kenyon recuperating, Mel and Don Kenyon called upon veteran Mike McGreevy to take over the reins and complete the season in the team’s No. 1. McGreevy’s mission from that point forward was two-fold. Naturally, one of the reasons was to win his first USAC championship. But to Mike, the other reason was just as important.
“I'd like to win it for Mel,” McGreevy said at the time. “With Mel sidelined in the Brooke Medical Center with those burns, he doesn't have a chance to defend the driving title he won last year. So, maybe I can get he and Don the car owners championship. We're sure going to keep trying.”
And he did. McGreevy sewed up the series’ entrant title for the Kenyon Brothers’ STP-sponsored machine with 416.6 points. Bob Nowicke's machine was second with 345.30 points with his driver, Bob Tattersall.
Along the way, en route to the driving title, McGreevy had driven for Jack London, Lloyd Hamm, Bob Steffes, Fred Gerhardt and in the Pestana-Lang machine with a total of seven wins, which was no mean feat since his closest competition, Tattersall, won a staggering, then series record, 12 feature events, five more than McGreevy did.
Often referred to as “Iron Mike,” since his 5’1” stature belies his ability behind the wheel of a race car, he took over the Kenyon Brothers STP Special on June 30, 10 days after Mel’s crash, getting up to speed during a three-week span during a late summer stretch in which he won three features, on August 12 at Rockford (Ill.) Speedway, on August 15 at Jackson (Mich.) Motor Speedway and on September 3 at the Mazon (Ill.) Speed Bowl.
In winning the USAC National Midget driving championship, McGreevy (Hayward, Calif.) compiled an astounding record. In 56 out of the possible 68 races he competed in, he finished outside the top-12 in only six events. He also finished inside the top-five in 37 races with seven firsts, 11 times second, was third on eight occasions, fourth thrice, fifth eight times and sixth three times, winning nearly $10,000 in prize money.
McGreevy started racing midgets in 1947 in the San Francisco, Calif. area and was the BCRA midget champion for 1958 and 1960. In 1963, he was 11th in the USAC National Midget point standings and, in 1964, had moved up to fourth place.
Don Horvath, a veteran of 10 years of racing, succumbed during an early season USAC National Midget event at California’s Vallejo Speedway on February 14. Horvath died as the result of injuries received when he flipped during a time trial run. The Riverside, Calif. native captured seven USAC victories between 1963-64, all of which came at venues in his home state.
To bolster the western portion of the series schedule, J.C. Agajanian, Tony Coldeway and Mel Allen joined forces to set up a west coast circuit that started in April and ran through the summer in October with the points all counting toward the USAC National Midget championship. On alternating Friday nights, races were contested at San Bernadino, Saugus and Bakersfield. These were augmented by Saturday night events at Ascot Park and the Kearney Bowl.
Likewise, 16-time USAC National Midget winner Billy Cantrell retired from active competition prior to the 1965 season but didn’t take a complete leave of absence from the racing scene. The 1962 Turkey Night Grand Prix victor was promptly named the west coast representative for the USAC National Midget division.
In March, car owner Bob Higman was re-elected as the USAC National Midget board representative with Mel Kenyon tabbed as the alternate. Bob and his wife, Pat, also became proud new parents of a son, Jeffery. Announcement of the birth was clever: Cubic Inches, 20; Dry Weight, 6 pounds., 14 ounces. Sponsor Name, Jeffery Newton. Qualifying Time, 6:25 a.m., 2/6/65. Designer, Bob Higman. Chief Mechanic, Pat Higman.
The series ran into 11 rainouts – and one blackout, the result of a transformer blowout at the Danville (Ill.) Fairgrounds.
