SEASON REVIEW: A LONG TIME COMING, ROA WRAPS UP FIRST USAC CRA SPRINT TITLE IN 2023

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Speedway, Indiana (November 13, 2023)………After more than 12 years of going up and down the road with the AMSOIL USAC CRA Sprint Cars, Brody Roa finally reached the pinnacle in 2023 as a first-time series driving champion.

For the Garden Grove, Calif. native, it’s his fourth overall USAC championship following previous points titles with the California Dirt Ford Focus Midgets (2009), the West Coast Sprint Cars (2016) and the Southwest Sprint Cars (2019).

But this particular one stands out among the rest.  Roa, a regular with USAC CRA since 2011, has come painfully close to a championship on numerous occasions throughout the years.  The 32-year-old driver finished second in the standings on three occasions in 2017-18-21 and was third another three times in 2012-16-19.

The thing is, for the duration of his decade-plus of sprint car racing, Roa had been synonymous with the family-owned No. 91R.  Initially, the plan for the season was to run his own car while dabbling in Inland Rigging’s Tom and Christy Dunkel’s 360 c.i. powered sprint car with the USAC West Coast series.  However, after a dinner with the Dunkels, those plans were doubled with the team adding a full slate of USAC CRA racing to the plate.

Dunkel had recently purchased the 410 c.i. Shaver engines that former Roa sponsor HD Industries had sold, and shortly thereafter, Roa sold much of his own equipment, including his Eagle chassis and his trailer.  Instead, for the 2023 season, Roa would be wheeling a DRC chassis, something which he had never done prior to the start of the year.  As it turned out, the start of the year set the tone for a championship run.

Roa reeled off a pair of victories on consecutive nights to open the season in January at Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway in his Inland Rigging – Dunkel Farms – Biker Bruce Fischer/DRC/Shaver Chevy.  In April, he began the first of two three-race winning streaks during the year, including his first win at Hanford, California’s Kings Speedway followed by a photo finish win over Mitchel Moles at Bakersfield, California’s The Dirt Track at Kern County Raceway Park and then followed up with his fifth win in eight races at Arizona’s Mohave Valley Raceway, equaling the best start by any driver in series history.

In a dominant June and July run, Roa collected a win in the longest distance race of the season in the 40-lap Bubby Jones & Ray Scheetz Memorial at Perris (Calif.) Speedway.  A victory at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway followed thereafter before gaining a milestone at Perris, marking his 21st career USAC CRA win, which moved him ahead of 2007 series champion and now USAC CRA Series Director Tony Jones for sole possession of fourth on the all-time series win list.

In the end, Roa corralled the series title by a commanding 114-point margin and provided the Tom & Christy Dunkel/BR Performance No. 17R its first series entrant championship.  Roa led all drivers in most major statistical categories, including eight wins, 173 laps led, 14 top-fives and 15 top-tens in the span of 18 feature starts.

Meanwhile, Tommy Malcolm (Corona, Calif.) had to wait eight years and 109 starts to make it to USAC CRA victory lane for the first time in his career.  And it was all worth the wait for the driver who has been a series regular since 2015.  In May, he and his Dino Napier-owned No. 5x reached the promised land for the first time, leading all 30 laps to score his initial series victory at Tulare, California’s Thunderbowl Raceway where it seemed fitting that the driver nicknamed “Tommy Thunder” picked up his first score.

Malcolm’s wait to win his second feature lasted exactly one week and one more start as he went back-to-back to capture the Salute to Indy at Perris.  In September, Malcolm’s breakout season continued with win number three in the Glenn Howard Classic at Perris.  In the final tally, Malcolm finished a career-best second in the series standings.

Daison Pursley (Locust Grove, Okla.) is undefeated in his USAC CRA career, making two starts and winning both within a 24-hour span in November at Cocopah during the running of the 56th annual Western World Championships, giving the home state team from Arizona (Team AZ Racing) its second consecutive Western World title after taking it with driver Jake Swanson in 2022.  The victory came in Pursley’s first visit to Arizona since suffering a severe spinal injury during a USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship event during the Western World Championships of 2021 at the now defunct Arizona Speedway.

Five drivers added a single USAC CRA victory in 2023.  Now two-time USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Champion Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) ventured west to find a seat in the J.W. Mitchell Motorsports ride and promptly took the victory in March at Perris.  Chase Johnson (Penngrove, Calif.) raced to the lead on the 10th lap and led the remaining 21 en route to a win in April for Josh Ford Motorsports at Mohave Valley.

April’s USAC CRA Sprint Car showdown at Perris was one that Matt Mitchell originally wasn’t even slated to compete in as a driver.  But not only did the veteran racer from Yorba Linda, Calif. compete, he made it a victorious effort.  Mitchell was originally intending to fly to Indiana to compete in that weekend’s USAC Silver Crown Sumar Classic.  But with its cancellation, Mitchell stayed back home in So. Cal. to add a win as a driver after winning as a car owner the month before.

In October at Mohave Valley, Ricky Lewis (Camarillo, Calif.) tallied his first career USAC CRA victory, leading the final 22 laps aboard his Dave Brown owned machine.  Lewis ultimately became the winningest non-wing sprint car driver in the USA during the 2023 season, winning 17 times total in six different states (Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri and Arizona) across a wide variety of series, including the Great Lakes Traditional Sprints, the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series, the Midwest Sprint Car Series, the USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association and USAC CRA, and also scored a couple local, unsanctioned victories for good measure.

C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) closed out his year in winning fashion in November by scoring USAC CRA season finale at Perris.  Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) paced the final 13 laps to give Michael Motorsports its first ever Perris victory.  For Leary, it was his second career USAC CRA victory at Perris after also grabbing a win at the half-mile dirt oval back in 2019.

Brothers Austin Williams (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Cody Williams (Corona, Calif.) finished third and fourth in the series standings, respectively.  Cody led all series drivers with six fast qualifying times on the year.

A.J. Bender (San Diego, Calif.) rounded out the top-five in the final points and tied with Malcolm as the winningest heat race driver of the season with six scores.

Grant Sexton (Lakeside, Calif.) tallied an eighth-place finish in the standings to earn Rookie of the Year honors for USAC CRA in 2023.

Sixty-eight (68) different drivers made a feature start during the 2023 season with Malcolm and Roa the only drivers making a start in all 18 feature events.
