USAC SPRINTS EYE OCTOBER 15 HURTUBISE CLASSIC; HODGES GRABS LAWRENCEBURG’S $10,000 FALL CLASSIC
Six races remain in the 2016 USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship, but only one will take place in the Midwest. The “Jim Hurtubise Classic” is scheduled for Saturday night, October 15 at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track after rains forced postponement of the race originally scheduled on September 16.
Hurtubise earned 14 USAC National Sprint car wins during his career and scored five USAC Sprint wins in a row at Terre Haute between 1960 and 1962. Four of those were National while one was a Midwest series race.
The 2016 USAC National Sprint Car calendar concludes with two races at Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway for the “Western World Championships” on November 4-5 and three at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway’s Budweiser “Oval Nationals” on November 10-12.
Will we see another first-time USAC National Sprint winner on October 15? We’ve already had seven brand-new National winners this season, namely Scotty Weir, Tyler Courtney, Kyle Cummins, Brent Beauchamp, Carson Short, C.J. Leary and Josh Hodges, who became the latest newcomer last Saturday at Lawrenceburg, Ind. Landon Simon also posted a non-points first-time win earlier this year in Pennsylvania.
Hodges, of Tijeras, N.M., won Saturday’s $10,000-to-win “Fall Nationals” at Lawrenceburg in his Jackson Compaction/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim/Gibson, setting a new 30-lap track record in the process. Chris Windom finished second ahead of Dave Darland, who led the first 17 laps. Kyle Cummins and Justin Grant rounded out the “top-five” at the checkered flag.
Tempe, Arizona’s Stevie Sussex, in his initial Midwest appearance, was the night’s ProSource fast qualifier. Carson Short came from 20th to 13th to claim the KSE Hard Charger Award.
Chad Boespflug, Kevin Thomas, Jr. and Brady Bacon won Saturday night’s heat races sponsored by Simpson Race Products, Competition Suspension, Inc. and Benic Enterprises, respectively. Sussex was victorious in the semi-feature sponsored by Indy Race Parts.
Bacon finished ninth, but continues to enjoy a large 245-point lead in the series standings.
