EASTERN STORM OPENS JUNE 7; BALLOU REPEATS AT “TONY HULMAN CLASSIC”
“Eastern Storm” is next on the horizon for USAC’s AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series, showcasing the nation’s top open-wheel talent in five events across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa. hosts the “Jesse Hockett Classic” opener on Tuesday night, June 7, followed by a “doubleheader” on Wednesday, June 8 at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa. A 40-lap, full points feature will be followed by a “special event” non-points feature. Thursday’s venue is New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway, while Saturday’s race is at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway and Sunday’s finale is at Susquehanna Speedway in York Haven, Pa. Friday is “off” for the Sprint Cars, while the USAC Silver Crown cars visit Williams Grove, Pa for the “Horn-Schindler Memorial.”
Defending USAC AMSOIL National Champion Robert Ballou of Rocklin, Calif. became only the third driver to record back-to-back victories in the prestigious “Tony Hulman Classic” last Wednesday, winning the traditional race at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. Steve Butler and Levi Jones were the only previous “back-to-back” Hulman Classic champs.
Ballou wrestled the lead from Thomas Meseraull on the 22nd lap and led the rest of the way in his MPHG Promotions/Blakesley’s Auto Maxim/Ott to beat Meseraull, Jon Stanbrough, Brady Bacon and Chris Windom to the checkered flag.
Ballou’s victory in the 46th running of the race has him seventh in the latest series standings entering “Eastern Storm.”
Bacon, on the other hand, emerged from Terre Haute with a 17-point lead over Meseraull in the new standings, trying to match his 2014 series title. He was last Wednesday’s ProSource Fast Qualifier, while Windom was the KSE Racing Products/B & W Auto Mart Hard Charger. Shane Cottle, Aaron Farney, Meseraull and Brady Short scored heat wins in races sponsored by Simpson Race Procucts, Competition Suspension, Benic Enterprises and Indy Race Parts.
