USAC SPRINTS HEAD FOR THE CLASS TRACK IN HAUBSTADT THIS SATURDAY
Though known primarily as a sprint car venue, the southwestern Indiana track in Haubstadt, near Evansville, known as Tri-State Speedway actually began its affiliation with the United States Auto Club by hosting four National Midget races from 1978-1980.
Drivers Sleepy Tripp, Barry Butterworth, Johnny Parsons and Lonnie Caruthers took those midget victories, but, since then, Tri-State Speedway has played host to 32 USAC National Sprint Car races, the first of which coming on September 9, 1983, when Rick Hood scored the first of his three series victories at “The Class Track,” also collecting a win in 1984 along with a victory in 1989, which was one of two USAC-sanctioned wing sprint car races at the track. Kenny Jacobs won the first winged USAC race at Tri-State in 1988.
Sikeston, Missouri’s Daron Clayton is the all-time winningest USAC Sprint Car driver at Tri-State Speedway with five scores between 2006 and 2014. Although Clayton won features at Tri-State behind the wheel of cars owned by Jeff Walker/Darryl Guiducci and Hank Byram, he is most recognized for his feats in the seat of his own Clayton Motorsports, yellow number 92 which is part of a four-way tie as the winningest team in USAC Sprint competition with three triumphs at the track along with Walker, Keith Kunz Motorsports and Tony Stewart Racing.
This Saturday night's USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship "Spring Showdodwn" co-sanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series, gets underway at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. with hot laps at 6:15pm, qualifying at 6:30pm and racing scheduled for 7:30pm. Adult general admission tickets are just $25. Students age 13-18 general admission tickets are $20, while children 12 and under are free.
